It’s a question of intent. When you take a picture, you intend to capture a moment. You know you didn’t capture the smell or the temperature, or the humidity, or any sound. And you didn’t capture anything outside the frame. Nor did you capture your mood or anyone else’s or the mood of the nation or the political and economic situation. You simply made a visual record of the direction of your gaze for a split second. Taking a picture is good if you see a phone number you want to use later.
If your intent is to make a picture and you know your camera, you will control the outcome. You will decide where to stand, where to point, what to include in the frame and when to snap the shutter – and express any of the above information and more.
A camera is an extension of your hand like a hammer or a fork. Our inventions augment us. In that respect, it doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have in your hand, if your intent is to make a picture, then make it. Don’t take it.
